About The Chairman
VN Dalmia is Chairman of Dalmia Continental Private Limited (DCPL). DCPL forms part of the Dalmia Group of companies founded by VN’s father, the industrialist Ramkrishna Dalmia, in the early 1930s as the Dalmia-Jain Group. DCPL has been a pioneer in establishing the popularity and use of olive oil in India. Launched in 2003 as DCPL’s flagship product, Leonardo Olive Oil became the country’s leading brand of olive oil. The brand was acquired by Cargill India in February 2014.
DCPL also launched India’s first brand of Canola Oil, Hudson, in 2007, and has been a pioneer in the establishment of this high-MUFA edible oil category in the country as well. In 2013, DCPL launched Marco Polo OliRyze, a blend of rice bran oil and olive pomace oil. In addition, DCPL’s product line also includes Leonardo Olives, Leonardo Pasta and Leonardo Premium Pickles.
Dalmia is the recipient of an Italian knighthood titled the ‘Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity’ in the rank of Commendatore (Knight Commander) in recognition of his pioneering work in promoting the use and popularity of Italian olive oil, on a commercial scale, in India. The prestigious knighthood was instituted in 1947 to honour persons who have contributed significantly to the development of friendly relations with Italy on the basis of language, culture and socio-economic activities. He has also received the ‘Premio Cultura Dell’Olio’ (olive oil cultural award) from the OlioOfficina festival in Italy.
Dalmia earned an MBA from the University of Virginia’s famed Darden Business School. He is now President Emeritus of its India Alumni Chapter. In July 2010, he was appointed to the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees, becoming the first Indian citizen, only non-US citizen (at that time) and third Asian ever to join the board. He has an Honours degree in economics from the University of Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce.
Dalmia is also chairman of Sunshine Tourism Services Private Limited (STSPL), a well-known provider of package tours in India. Previously, he was commercial director of Dalmia Biscuits Pvt. Ltd., where he oversaw major expansion and revenue growth, and executive director of Dalmia Dadri Cement Limited where he conceived and undertook a major revival plan for the ailing company with the involvement of central and state governments, banks and labour unions.
In community activities, Dalmia is the Founder President of the Indian Olive Association and a long standing member of the Managing Committee of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Dalmia was the Executive Vice President of the Babu Jagjivan Ram National Foundation, a foundation under the Ministry of Social Welfare, which is dedicated to the upliftment of the backward classes of India. Dalmia was previously President of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce – NIC (IACC-N) and Chairman of the India-Mexico and India-Colombia Joint Business Councils. He was presented a Leadership Award by the IACC-N in 2013.
Dalmia is the son of group founder and pioneer industrialist Ramkrishna Dalmia and Saraswati Dalmia. The Dalmia family and its relatives control companies in India and abroad the turn-over of which, if aggregated, exceeds US $ 10 billion.
Dalmia is an art collector, a keen photographer, a voracious reader and a fitness enthusiast who works out daily in the gym. Dalmia owns an extensive music collection and the drums are his favored instrument (he was an enthusiastic member of a college band). The Beatles, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, U2, Melissa Etheridge and Coldplay are some of his favourite performers. Aeromodelling and aviation are other abiding interests. Italy and USA are his favourite destinations for travel.
